Batch#3
Impressive kick-off with new startups
Each batch of the Circular Economy Accelerator program begins with the kick-off event where the startups present their ideas to partners and sponsors in three minutes. The kickoff of the third batch continued this tradition and provided a pleasant surprise: The audience was noticeably impressed by the startups' promising approaches to the circular economy. The ideas and business models presented provide glimpses into their high maturity levels, making their further development in Circular Valley® all the more exciting.
The time of linearity is over, we have to change to circularity. You are the fuel for this change.

Dr. Johannes Kirchhoff,
Board member of the Circular Economy Initiative of the Federation of German Industries
For the third cohort, Circular Valley® has invited over 30 startups from around 20 countries to Germany to support them over the upcoming three months. The support is targeted at accelerating the startup's market entry and growth by connecting them to customers, partners and investors from the Circular Valley® network.
IMPRESSIONS
Kickoff, Batch 3
The startups participating in the third batch of our accelerator program had the opportunity to meet some representatives of our partner companies. And vice versa. There were inspiring pitches first and promising conversations afterwards.
13,000 KILOMETERS APART
Startups from five continents
While the initial ideas were developed up to 13,000 kilometers apart, Circular Valley® brings all startups together. Young companies from five continents made their way to the Rhine-Ruhr region to refine their ideas and business models and to find potential partners and investors. At the same time, they grow into a close community during the three months here: in respectful feedback on each other's projects and in the program's workshops and activities.

Numerous experts
share their experiences with the participants and company visits to Circular Valley® partners are offered during the program.

Moreover, the startups get to know the region, as well as each other through various leisure activities such as hiking or going out. Ideas brought to Circular Valley® by the startups in the third batch include bottles made from paper waste, sanitary pads made from agricultural waste, and building materials made from former shoe soles.

WEF 2022
Circular Valley® at the World Economic Forum
The circular economy was among the central themes of this year's World Economic Forum. Consequently, Circular Valley® initiator Dr. Carsten Gerhardt was a sought-after discussion partner in Davos by guests from very different fields.

To foster their shared sustainability goals, Gerhardt discussed ideas for waste reduction and circularity with representatives of the software company Microsoft, which has launched a program called "Entrepreneurship for Positive Impact", with the Prime Minister of Flanders, Jan Jambon, and with the top management of the Indian IT company HCL Technologies.
It was noticeable in Davos that the topic of sustainability is gaining strong momentum. It plays a big role in companies' strategies, so it's interesting for many to learn what the practical side of the issue looks like in Circular Valley®

Dr. Carsten Gerhardt
The circular economy is "crucial for achieving climate goals"
Mention in the coalition agreement
This month, North Rhine-Westphalia's new state government has formed as a coalition of CDU and Bündnis 90/Die Grünen.

In their coalition agreement, the circular economy is mentioned at the very beginning of the chapter on economic strategies, stating the circular economy is "crucial for achieving climate goals".

This not only delighted the Circular Valley® team, but it is also a great honor for Circular Valley® to be explicitly mentioned in the agreement. "An initiative like Circular Valley® "already has an impact far beyond North Rhine-Westphalia," according to the coalition agreement.

PARTNER TALKS
Our partners learn from each other
Circular Valley® offers a new event: the Partner Talk. The basic rule is both simple and important: what is discussed here stays here. The participants of the premiere particularly appreciated this confidential atmosphere. Representatives of medium-sized and large companies as well as politicians were able to openly discuss sustainability-related challenges and to exchange about possible solutions.

The unanimous wish of the participants: to meet again soon at the Partner Talk in Circular Valley®.
GREAT OPENNESS AND HONEST ENTHUSIASM
Great interest in the Bundestag
The fact that Circular Valley® is to the circular economy what Silicon Valley is to the digital economy has spread to the government district in Berlin. Circular Valley's managing director Andreas Mucke witnessed this firsthand during a visit to the capital. He met members of the government there and discussed with them, among other things, the paragraphs on circular economy in the coalition agreement. "I experienced great openness and honest enthusiasm for our idea," Mucke said after the visit.

INNOVATION CITY BOTTROP I BUSINESS METROPOLE RUHR
New partners from the Ruhr area
Circular Valley® is pleased to announce two new partners from the Ruhr region. At the end of June, cooperation agreements were signed with "Innovation City Bottrop", which is the first German host of the European Circular Economy Hotspot program this year, and with the Business Metropole Ruhr, the umbrella organization of municipal business development agencies.

Together, the partners will initiate projects and be a platform for the circular economy.
SEGINUS I NYUNGU AFRICA I GREEN OCEAN I PLASTIC FISHER
Circular Valley® startups successful in competitions worldwide
Over the past few months, several of our startups have once again won awards. Seginus, a startup from batch 2, won a major international award: At the Recircle Awards, a global authority in the field of car tire recycling, the Ecuadorian startup was awarded in the category "Best EPR Scheme" (Extended Producer Responsibility). Seginus is a non-profit initiative that connects all the players in the end-of-life tire value chain and organizes solutions for their recycling and upcycling.

Mary Nyaruai Muriithi from Nyungu Africa, one of our current batch 3 startups, was awarded "Best Female Entrepreneur" by TotalEnergies in Kenya. That is why she is currently smiling from many large billboards in her home country. Nyungu Africa develops sanitary pads from agricultural waste (pineapple and corn husk fibers) that are not only body-friendly but also biodegradable.

Seginus
Successes have also been recorded in Germany: Green Ocean (batch 2) and Plastic Fischer (batch 1) made first and second place, respectively, at the Sustainable Startup Days pitch competition at the University of Wuppertal. This double victory of Circular Valley® startups once again shows our startups not only impress with their business ideas but also with their pitching skills, which they have partly acquired through the coaching during the accelerator program.
